The Three Horned Face, the Triceratops

Triceratops was a large ceratopsid, which lived 68 to 65 million years ago. They lived in what is now North America and nowhere else. Due to their unique appearance and their use in modern media, Triceratops is one of the most easily recognised dinosaurs in the world. The Triceratops has been seen in many different media outlets such as movies, videogames, books, and is considered the official state fossil of South Dakota and the official state dinosaur of Wyoming.

As Triceratops is one of the most popular types of dinosaurs, they are one of the most popular dinosaur fossils displayed in museums. Othneil Charles Marsh found the first Triceratops skeleton near Denver, Colorado, in 1887. Since then, most of the Triceratops skeletons found have been located in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Full skeletons of Triceratops are fairly rare, as normally only skeletons of their heads are found. The name Triceratops is Greek for “Three Horned Face”, which relates to the three horns that adorned the skull of the Triceratops.

The Triceratops was the largest ceratopsid that ever existed. Scientists believe that average Triceratops’ length was around 26-30 feet long, and they were about 9.5-10 feet tall. Scientists theorize that they weighed around 6-12 tones; males were larger and heavier than females. Stout but sturdy legs held up their large and heavy body. The horns and skull were the most impressive and unique thing about the Triceratops; their skulls were the largest of any land animal ever and their horns could grow to 3 feet long. Their horns were used as a defence against predators and rivals, and the large frills on their skulls were used in mating rituals and scaring off rivals and even predators. To add even more protection for them, Triceratops lived in herds of 8-14...

Triceratops were herbivores, like every other kind of ceratopsid. Scientists believe that they ate plant matter from low growing plants. Triceratops had very few predators; they were generally only hunted by Tyrannosaurs Rex. Tyrannosaurs Rex would work either in a mated pair or by themselves, and try to pick off the weakest member of the herd. However, the Tyrannosaurs Rex would have to fight heavy resistance from the alpha male Triceratops, which would be the biggest and meanest of all the Triceratops in the herd. Scientists believe these fights were rare, but when they did occur they would end with both sides being wounded or even dying from the titanic struggle.

Triceratops is by far one of the best-known and most popular types of dinosaurs. They were powerful and unique looking dinosaurs, prehistoric rhinoceros built to fight off predators that grew to the size of a two-story building. However, while the Triceratops could fight off the mightiest of predatory dinosaurs, they could not fight against the greatest of all predators, extinction.
